Sigma Youth Leadership Foundation

Thank you for your interest in becoming a part of a long-standing tradition with the Sigma Youth Leadership Foundation, Incorporated. We are currently seeking a male that exemplifies the qualities of scholarship that will be honored at our eighth annual SYLF Scholarship Banquet "Passing the Torch From Generation to Generation". 

We are not accepting applications for the 2017 James Weldon Johnson High School Scholarship. In order to apply for this application, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a male presently enrolled as a high school senior at a high school located in the state of Georgia.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA at the time of the application deadline.
  • Should be a responsible, supportive, self-disciplined, positive, and energetic individual who is interested banquet to receive the award on Saturday, May 20, application.
Enclosed you will find the 2017 James Weldon Johnson scholarship application with forms attached. The scholarship application must be uploaded to the SYLF website by Friday, April 14, 2017 by 11:59pm. Please make sure that the following forms/documents are turned in:
  • COMPLETED 2017 James Weldon Johnson Scholarship Application
  • Current Resume
  • Scholarship Essay (between 2-4 pages maximum)
  • OFFICIAL copy of high school transcript
  • Three forms of recommendation:
Once we receive your application, you will receive an email confirming that we have received your application. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted! NO EXCEPTIONS! After all applications have been recieved, applicants will be assigned points based off the following information:

Scholarship Rules and Guidelines:
  1. Must be an African American male presently enrolled as a high school senior at a high school located in the state of Georgia.
  2. Must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA at the time of the application deadline.
  3. Should be a responsible, supportive, self-disciplined, positive, and energetic individual who is interested in the welfare of education and in the community.
  4. A total of one scholarship will be rewarded. The number of awards is at the sole discretion of the SYLF scholarship committee.
  5. The scholarship will be worth $1,000 and it is non-renewable. The award will be paid to the school in one payment of $1,000 at the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester.
  6. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university in the state of Georgia and will be made payable to the selected school.
  7. The SYLF scholarship committee will judge the submitted scholarship applications. Finalists will be selected based on the application and attached documents. The scholarship recipient will be chosen and notified by Sunday, April 30, 2017.
  8. The SYLF scholarship committee reserves the right to conduct an interview of the finalists.
  9. The scholarship recipients will be determined by the Sigma Youth Leadership Foundation. It is solely at the discretion of the SYLF scholarship committee to make the determination of which applicants followed the guidelines as set forth in the application.
  10. The winner must attend the scholarship banquet to receive the award on Saturday, May 20, 2017.

TAB Scholarship


Dear applicant,

The TAB scholarship is committed to the growth and development of rising high school students pursuing the next level in their educational journey. We feel it is important to aid and develop talented young Americans in pursuit of higher education. Through gifts provided by donations and fundraising, the TAB Scholarship is able to provide scholarships to deserving students on an equal opportunity regardless of race, sex, creed, or religious preference.


Award: Scholarship awards range from $150 to $500 and should be applied towards tuition, room, board, and books. Checks will be mailed and made payable to the recipient.


Eligibility Criteria
  • High school senior transitioning to college
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5
  • Planning to attend an institution for an entire academic year in the fall of 2017 
  • 50 hours of active community service

Scholarship Application: Complete and submit TAB Scholarship application by March 17, 2017.

Essay: Applicants are required to submit a 500 word minimum or less on one of the following topics. The essay must be typed using 12 point font and double spaced.
  1. Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability both in and out of school, and tell how your leadership impacted positive change.
  2. Teacher quality is the number one determinant of student's achievement. Describe the attributes of your favorite teacher and the impact he/she had on your academic achievement.
  3. Discuss why you want to obtain a college education. Now describe in detail how you are going to use that degree to impact your community and the world.
Official Academic Transcript
Applicants must request an official academic transcript from their most recent school. All transcripts must have an official raised seal and/or official signature to be valid. Transcripts that do not have a raised seal and/or signature will not be accepted. Class schedules, report cards, or progress reports will not be accepted. Transcripts must be included in the packets.

Confirmation of Community Service Form
Applicants are requires to have performed a minimum of 50 "active" service hours within the 12 months preceding the application deadline. Scholarship applicants should complete and submit the Confirmation of Community Service Form as certification of service performed. 

Active service shall be defined as an activity that allows one to extend themselves in service to another without compensation, remuneration, personal gain or benefit.

Active Service Examples: serving food to the homeless through soup kitchens or shelters, tutoring students, picking up litter and recycling, coordinating a community food/shelter drive, serving as an officer in an official position of a civic organization

Passive Service Examples: unacceptable service projects (donating food/clothing in a clothing drive, babysitting, singing in a choir, serving as an officer in an official church position)

Reference Letter
Applicant must submit two (2) letters of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or non-related family member.

The John, Lynne, and Nicole Belli Memorial Scholarship


Purpose

The Belli Scholarship honors the memory of John, Lynne, and Nicole Belli by affording college tuition and expense monies to a diverse group of Gwinnett County high school graduates, particularly those with documented economic need who may not be identified as academic or athletic leaders in their schools but possess the skills to be academically successful in college.   • Provides $5000 annually for college expenses including tuition, books, and fees up to $20,000
  • Renewable for up to four years of documented college coursework (must maintain a 2.0 college GPA)

Criteria

  • Students must apply during their senior year of high school
  • Students must receive a College Preparatory diploma at graduation
  • Top 10% of senior class is NOT eligible
  • Students must have a 2.5 minimum cumulative GPA at time of high school graduation to receive the scholarship
  • Student must have TWO recommendation letters (one from two different core subject teachers) substantiating student's ability to be successful in college level coursework
  • Submit a one-page essay on your financial need, career goal, and education plan as well as any extraordinary circumstances you have overcome to graduate high school
  • Economically students will be given priority in awarding this scholarship

Another Law Enforcement Scholarship



Dolciani Law Enforcement Explorer Scholarship, sponsored by the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation, is now offering a one-time award of $5,000 and a one-time award of $2,500 to graduating seniors of GCPS who are also members of the Suwanee Police Department Explorers Program.

Gwinnett County Constitutional Officers Announce Statewide Scholarship Opportunity


Each year, the Constitutional Officer's Association of Georgia offers students to win scholarship. This year, the association will offer three scholarships.


Amounts: Three scholarships will be offered...

Requirements: To be eligible, students must...
  • be Georgia residents
  • graduate high school by the spring 2017 or be enrolled in an accredited Georgia college or university
  • seeking a degree in a field related to government/law enforcement, political science, accounting, finance, business, or pre-law

  • type a 1,000 word essay that describes the mandated duties of that office and explains why the oath of office is important

  • Economically disadvantaged students will be given priority in awarding this scholarship.  

Gwinnett County Public Schools will establish a selection committee each year and coordinate choosing appropriate recipients for scholarships.  Two high school counselors (minimum) must serve on this committee along with other members TBD.  Scholarships will be awarded after graduation upon confirmation of a 2.5 minimum high school GPA.   

Scholarships will be renewable up to four years ($20,000 total) providing recipients remain enrolled in college and maintain a cumulative 2.0 grade point average or above.  Recipients will request the $5000 from the Northeast Georgia Community Foundation with an official transcript from the previous year’s college coursework during the summer prior to each fall semester.  The scholarship money will be sent directly to the college or university of the recipient’s choice.  No money will ever be awarded directly to the recipient.

Belli Scholarship (Deadline Postmarked by 3/29/17) is designed to help a senior who has shown determination and grit by overcoming extenuating circumstances to reach graduation and have a documented economic need.  The minimum GPA requirement is 2.5.  The strongest applications clearly articulate the hardship or circumstance the student has overcome and highlights the specific qualities within the student.   Please read the directions and attached application.

Atlanta Alumnae Panhellenic Association Scholarships


Since 1932, the AAPA has provided scholarships to women from the Atlanta area, as part of its goal of supporting academic achievement among women.

The Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship

Upsilon Alpha Omega, the Gwinnett Chapter of Alpha kappa Alpha sorority, inc., was chartered in Gwinnett County on January 29, 1994. One of the first challenged taken on by the chapter was to establish a scholarship for young women in Gwinnett County. The scholarship was named in honor of one of our chartering members, Mrs. Beauty P. Baldwin. Thus far, we have awarded a number of scholarships totaling thousands of dollars to college-bound women.

Upsilon Alpha Omega is offering a scholarship to African-American high school seniors to further their educational opportunities. It is the chapter's goal to aggressively promote post-secondary educational endeavors. The scholarship will be awarded to students who meet the following scholarship qualifications:

Qualifications:
  • Must be a Gwinnett county Public School senior
  • Of African-American descent (male or female)
  • Must already be accepted to an accredited four-year college or university
  • Must possess leadership potential and discernible good character
  • Must demonstrate superior scholastic achievement (minimum 3.0 GPA)
Scholarship Selection 
To be considered for the Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship, applicants must be submit the following by March 4, 2019:
  1. A completed application. It is imperative that the application be completed in full.
  2. A one-page double-spaced (typed) personal statement summarizing why the applicant should be awarded the Beauty P. Baldwin Scholarship and how the scholarship will help him/her pursue his/her career ambition. Be sure to include community service activities in the statement.
  3. A sealed copy of the applicant's transcript. 
  4. Two sealed letters of recommendation from any combination of teachers, counselors, employers, school administrators or ministers.
  5. Proof of acceptance into an accredited four-year college or university.
Scholarship selection process
  • Completed applications that meet the above criteria must be postmarked by March 4 , 2019 (no exceptions).
  • Applicants will be notified by the scholarship committee if they are selected for an interview between the dates of March 25-28, 2019. If not selected you will be notified.
  • Selected students will be interviewed the week of April 15-19, 2019.
  • Students selected to receive scholarships will be notified by April 22, 2019.
  • Scholarship recipients will be honored at a scholarship banquet sponsored by Upsilon Alpha Omega. Details will be mailed to recipients. Please save the date, June 8, 2019.
  • Students not selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by mail after the final interviews.
